SECOND THOUGHTS October 2011, or Thereabouts |
|
The economists tell us that the recession has been over for a year. Hurricane season is half over, we’re in the fourth quarter, and the postal rates are about to go up. It’s time for me to entertain you with techie tips and my next occasional newsletter! I present myself as the “Computer Wizard.” I am the technical person with social skills who brings productivity improvement to your 2 to 25 computers, servers, software, hardware, and Internet applications in your office network, old or new. ====== Mourning Steve Jobs. Yes, Steve was a visionary. He dreamed up new products that little people would buy. This is different from marketing to the Fortune 500 who buy 20,000 copies at a time. What the little guys are buying, the big guys will notice. And they’ll want to buy 20,000 copies. ====== Out of the Office. I was recently travelling miles from home. With my SmartPhone and Google, I had email and web surfing. Long distance was a free call. I had maps that showed me where I was going. I could look up landmarks I passed and phrases I heard. When a different language was spoken, I could translate it. I could look up the time of sunset, find a good restaurant, and download a book to read while I waited. ======
====== Coupon Sites that I see on client PCs are the cause of Trojan attacks. Tempting you with discounts, these sites can also download bad guys onto your PC while you are shopping. ====== Flash Player is yet another popular program that can gather data on you. Open Control Panel and then open Flash Player Settings Manager. Here I delete all saved data. It’s just because I’m paranoid. Look at the “Camera and Mic” tab. I wonder if a shopping website can watch me on my own laptop camera as I ponder my next purchase? Like I said, I’m paranoid. ====== Letting your PC clog up with old files and spyware before you do anything, is like letting your car engine seize up before changing the oil. It’s good that someone look at the equipment on which you make your living. If you don’t want to do it, that is what your visiting techie is for. When your technology finally does die, buy all you can, when you can, and keep it as long as you can. If you have been coasting for several years, you may experience a “snowball rolling down the hill effect” once one component fails. New software won’t run on old hardware. A new operating system will not run your old programs. Your old printer has no matching connector for a new machine. And the new stuff is so pretty to look at.
