SECOND THOUGHTS

February 2010, or Thereabouts

The New Year is really here. I have closed out 2009 and handed my numbers over to my accountant. Clients still need to keep old equipment working. It's time for me to entertain you with techie tips and my next occasional newsletter!

I present myself as the "Computer Wizard." I am the technical person with social skills who brings productivity improvement to your 2 to 25 computers, servers, software, hardware, and Internet applications in your office network, old or new.

======

Windows 7 is in my office. It works fine. I also have Vista and XP. I must practice on the software on which I consult. I have Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 and a disk to upgrade it to 2008.

Microsoft will continue to support XP until April 8, 2014.

======

Upgrade creep is when every program you use gets bigger with every update. Each program will want to grab more and more memory. The limit in XP 32-bit is 3.5 gig of RAM. 64-bit XP, Vista, and 7 can manage far more memory. For you who open every application at once, this is the need that will push you to buy new equipment.

System Restore is a feature inside the Help and Support option in the Start Menu. When you buy a new Windows 7 or Vista PC, make sure this feature is turned on.

======

NetBots are programs that work in the background on your computer to relay spam, attack web servers, infect more computers, and perform other illicit activities. Your computer runs slow for you as resources are diverted to mass attacks. More home computers are infected with netbots than business PCs because they receive less maintenance. There is a removal tools on the back page.

======

Piggybacks are when you choose to download an application and with it comes a new toolbar or a change your default search engine. To increase the usage of their products, companies pay for your free download of services you want.

Look for a box to check NO, or delete the unwanted feature once it shows up.

======

FaceBook is fun. Visit your Account: Privacy Settings. See what you are sharing with Friends, Friends of Friends, Friends and Networks, or Everyone. You can edit these choices if you think you are too open to the world. You can customize which groups or individuals can see what about you. Sometimes, features change so check back.

Be selective in the surveys you respond to such as, "Which serial killer are you most like?"

======

Relationships matter. Business has still not recovered. Continue to check on clients and prospects. Stay visible in the community. Remain of value to others and learn something new.

Make the rounds of everyone you know.
